X-15 Gains World Sailing Recognition: What Does It Mean?

Class recognition in November 2025 opened the path to a world championship. Explore what one-design wingfoil racing offers.

On November 8, 2025, the World Sailing General Assembly approved official class status for X-15. In its November 13 announcement, the X-15 Class described itself as the first World Sailing one-design wingfoil class. The key development is an institutional framework for holding world championship-level events.

One-design racing puts competitors on equipment that meets a common set of class rules. X-15 aims to reduce the burden of an equipment-development race and put more emphasis on riding skill and tactical decisions. It is a racing system with equipment rules and event organization as well as a product name.

Common specifications do not mean technology stands still. The X-15 Class plans to evolve equipment periodically as foil technology advances. Actual update timing follows the latest rules for each division. Athletes preparing to enter should check the rules and permitted equipment for their event alongside the product names.

This decision concerns international class status. It does not mean Olympic discipline or equipment selection. To understand X-15 today, look at how its status connects with actual events and athlete-development programs.

This explainer draws on the X-15 Class announcement of November 13, 2025, and World Sailing’s November 8 General Assembly report. Approval took place on November 8, distinct from the announcement date. Checked September 8, 2026.
