Take a small adventure into the world of the picture
A big world map and a blank postcard are ready for you. Shall we take an imaginary trip on the map today? In this activity, you pick a place you would like to visit. Then you think about the route to get there and the things to pack for the trip. Your story can be about a faraway journey. It can also be about exploring a familiar beach with your family.
Try it together like this
Look at the two maps side by side
Put the two pictures, 'Adventure map' and 'Trip planning and postcard,' next to each other and find the names of lands and seas. On the compass, N means north, E means east, S means south and W means west. NE (northeast), SE (southeast), SW (southwest) and NW (northwest) are the directions in between. Pick one place you know and one place you have never heard of. Talk about where each one is.
Choose where to start and where to finish
Make a small mark where you want to start and where you want to arrive. Draw a route that connects the two places. Pick some spots along the way where you would like to rest or look around. You can also write the seas and views you imagine next to your line.
Give a reason for each thing you pack
In the packing list, write or draw the things you want to bring. Say why you need each one. This helps you check whether you forgot anything. Think about things for the water, and also things for breaks and for after you get back.
Write a postcard from your trip
Fill in the blanks on the postcard: where you started, where you are going, the weather, how paddling feels and the views you saw. If you have not been there yet, say that it is what you imagined. Choose who will get your postcard, then read it out loud. Now you have a short adventure story!
Let’s talk
What do you think?
- What seas or lands lie between the two places you chose on the map?
- If you had to leave one thing behind, what would you pick? What would you be sure to keep?
