When you start looking at boards, you soon wonder whether to begin with a hard board or an inflatable. Starboard HQ's infographic compares the two on four criteria. Shall we apply them to your own situation?

01. Start by comparing storage and transport

An inflatable SUP can be deflated and packed into a bag. If storage space at home is limited, or you'd like to carry your gear inside your car, first see whether packing it down to carry works for you.

A hard board keeps its shape and length even when you're not using it. Decide in advance where you'll store it and how you'll load it on your car, and you can picture getting ready at the water much more concretely.

02. How do you want it to feel on the water?

Starboard HQ's comparison picture leans toward the hard board for performance, and the inflatable for storage and transport. But the bars in the picture aren't a test report measuring every product under the same conditions.

First pick what you want to do, such as relaxed cruising, surfing or racing, then compare models made for that use. The name of a construction type alone can't easily describe how every board rides.

03. Durability depends on the model and how it's used, too

The original rates durability higher for the hard board. Don't read that as a guarantee that every hard board is tougher than every inflatable. You need to check the materials and construction, and how the board is looked after, too.

How you handle your gear matters as well: bumps in transit, dragging it along the ground, leaving it in the heat for a long time. Whichever you choose, following the care instructions for your board is the same.

04. Two questions to help you choose

If you haven't settled on a storage space yet, start by picturing the trip from home to the water. If you already have storage and transport sorted, a good next step is to compare models that suit the riding you want.

  • Does your everyday life call for a board that folds into a bag?
  • Have you checked both the riding you want and your storage and transport conditions?
